Heritage House is an adaptive re-use of an existing assisted living facility into 66 units of housing for low income individuals, many of whom require supportive housing. The property was vacant since 2004, and required substantial renovation work to be habitable and to meet the needs of the new use. Assisted living units were adapted into studio apartments with kitchenettes, 10% of the units were made fully accessible, public and administrative spaces were re-organized to accommodate management, supportive service and resident amenity spaces, and new systems and finishes were installed throughout.
The project is adjacent to Valle Verde, a new affordable housing community designed by Gunkel Architecture. Together, Heritage House and Valle Verde are situated along a creek and within a residential neighborhood, requiring substantial community engagement, sensitivity to the environment, and a keen understanding of how to design housing for some of our most vulnerable residents.
