After many years of operating a bakery on an underdeveloped site in North Oakland, the owners of the site reached out to Gunkel Architecture to design much-needed family-friendly housing, including a few very-low income units. The project includes 20 apartments, a new and programmatically-updated bakery, a new space for the barber shop that is currently on site, and a resident parking garage.
Embracing the eclectic surrounding neighborhood, the contemporary design utilizes a well-balanced palette of high-quality materials. Dynamic balconies – private and common – and large storefronts opening to busy businesses engage the sidewalk and street, contributing to the safety and vitality of the block.
